If you just bought a laptop and everything on it is in English, typing Nepali can feel like a wall. It isn't. There are three real ways to do it, and you almost certainly only need one of them.

What is the easiest way to type Nepali on a laptop? The easiest option for beginners is to type Nepali phonetically using English letters. Typing "mero ghar nepal ho" can be converted into Nepali Unicode text, नेपाल में लिखा। instantly, without installing anything. Windows 11 can also be configured with a Nepali keyboard input so you can type directly inside any app, or you can skip installation entirely with Merokalam's own browser-based Nepali keyboard. If you already know the traditional Preeti keyboard layout, you can keep typing in Preeti and convert it to Unicode whenever you need to share or publish it.

A one-time Windows setting that lets you type Nepali directly inside any app on your laptop, without opening a website first. Best if you type Nepali daily.

3

Preeti Keyboard

The traditional fixed-position layout still used in many Nepal government offices and typing jobs. Requires memorizing key positions, and produces Preeti font text rather than Unicode.

Harder

These three are genuinely different systems, not variations of the same thing. Confusing them is the single most common reason Nepali typing goes wrong on a new laptop, so it's worth understanding what separates them before you set anything up.

What Is Nepali Unicode?

Unicode is an encoding standard, a shared system that assigns each character, including every Devanagari letter used in Nepali, a fixed underlying code that computers everywhere agree on. That's different from Preeti, which is a legacy keyboard-mapping font system explained in the next section. When your Nepali text is real Unicode, it generally works consistently across:

Websites
Gmail
Facebook
Google Docs
Microsoft Word
Government forms
Search engines
Phones and modern apps

Example, Unicode: नेपाल. This is why Unicode is generally the better default for anything you plan to publish, search, or read on more than one device.

Nepali Unicode vs Preeti: Which Should You Use?

Unicode is an encoding standard. Preeti is a legacy font and keyboard-mapping system, not merely "a different font" in the ordinary sense. Preeti maps Nepali characters onto the same character codes normally used for English letters, so a document only displays correctly if the exact Preeti font file is installed on the viewing device. Without it, Preeti text shows up as broken English letters instead of Nepali.

For a deeper side-by-side comparison, including when Preeti still genuinely makes sense, see Merokalam's Romanized vs Preeti vs Unicode guide.

Method 2: How to Set Up Nepali Typing in Windows 11

This is the option for people who type Nepali often enough that opening a website every time gets annoying. It's a one-time setup.

1
Open SettingsSelect Start, then Settings.
2
Go to Time & languageIn the left sidebar of Settings.
3
Open Language & regionThis shows your currently installed languages.
4
Select Add a languageNext to "Preferred languages."
5
Search for Nepali and install itType "Nepali," select the language (नेपाली), then Next, then Install.
6
Add the keyboard layout you wantClick the three-dot menu next to Nepali, choose Language options, then Add a keyboard under "Installed keyboards" if you want an additional layout.

Windows menu names and screen layouts can shift slightly between Windows 11 feature updates. If a step doesn't match exactly what you see, look for the closest equivalent: Settings → Time & language → Language & region is the consistent path Microsoft documents for this feature.

Test the Keyboard

Once Nepali is installed, open Notepad or Microsoft Word, switch to the Nepali keyboard (see the next section), and type a few words to confirm it worked:

नेपाल
नेपाली
मेरो नाम

If Devanagari characters appear, setup worked. If you see nothing or English letters, jump to Troubleshooting below.

How to Switch Between English and Nepali Keyboard

Once Nepali is installed, Windows gives you two ways to switch:

Windows + Space: cycles through all your installed keyboard layouts, ENG to NEP and back.
Taskbar language icon: click the input-language indicator in the bottom-right system tray and pick a layout directly.

To quickly return to English, press Windows + Space again (or click the taskbar icon) until the indicator shows ENG. If Windows + Space doesn't do anything, only one keyboard layout is currently installed on your system, revisit the setup steps above.

Can Windows 11 Type Nepali Phonetically?

Windows' own built-in Nepali keyboard generally follows the Traditional layout, a fixed-position layout rather than a sound-based one, so out of the box it is not the same as typing "mero ghar" and getting मेरो घर automatically. Some systems also list a Romanized or Transliteration keyboard option under the same Nepali language entry; availability of this specific option can vary by Windows build, so check the list under Language options → Add a keyboard on your own PC rather than assuming it will be there.

If you specifically want phonetic Nepali typing, whether or not your Windows build offers a Romanized layout, the two reliable paths are Merokalam's browser-based Easy Nepali Typing tool (no install) or a third-party phonetic input method like Google Input Tools (a separate download or browser extension, not a Windows built-in feature). Don't assume every Indic language has identical phonetic support inside Windows; verify what's actually listed on your machine before building a workflow around it.

How to Type Nepali in Microsoft Word

Microsoft Office uses your Windows input-language settings for keyboard input, so once a language is installed in Windows, Word can use it. Microsoft currently directs users to add keyboard languages through Settings → Time & language → Language & region, the same path covered above.

Option A: Windows Nepali Input

Install Nepali in Windows (above), switch to it with Windows + Space, and type directly inside Word. Best for daily Word users.

Option B: Type Online, Then Paste

Use Easy Nepali Typing, copy the Unicode result, and paste it into Word. No Windows setting changes needed.

Option C: Preeti for Legacy Documents

If you're editing an existing document that was originally typed in Preeti, continue in Preeti so the formatting and font stay consistent. See the Preeti section below.

Font Notes for Word

Modern Unicode Nepali text does not require the old Preeti font to display correctly, any common Unicode-capable Devanagari font will render it. If Nepali text in Word shows as squares or broken characters, this usually points to a font or encoding mismatch rather than a typing problem. Be cautious about installing random .ttf font files from unfamiliar download sites; if you need the Preeti font specifically, use a known, verified source.

How to Type Nepali in Google Docs

  1. Use the Windows Nepali keyboard you set up above, it works inside the browser the same way it works in desktop apps.
  2. Or type in Easy Nepali Typing and copy/paste the Unicode result into your Doc.
  3. Or use a supported browser input method/extension if you already have one configured.

Example: type nepal ma dherai himal chan and paste the result, नेपालमा धेरै हिमाल छन्, directly into a Google Doc; it displays the same as any other Google Docs text.

How to Type Nepali in Gmail on a Laptop

The same three routes work for Gmail: your Windows Nepali keyboard, copy-paste from Easy Nepali Typing, or a browser-based input tool such as Google Input Tools, which Google documents as supporting Gmail alongside Search and Docs. Since Gmail's own settings UI changes periodically, verify the current input-tool option inside Gmail's settings at the time you set it up. Example compose text: नमस्ते, तपाईंलाई कस्तो छ?

How to Type Nepali on Facebook From a Laptop

Unicode text can be entered directly using an installed Windows keyboard, or pasted from Merokalam's typing tool, the same way as any other website. This applies the same way across:

Facebook
Messenger
WhatsApp Web
Instagram web
X
Reddit

How to Type Nepali in Online Government Forms

Most current Nepal government portals accept standard Unicode Nepali text the same way any modern website does, so typing with a Windows Nepali keyboard or pasting from Easy Nepali Typing generally works. That said, not every Nepal government system uses identical encoding or the same underlying software, so a small number of older or specialized systems may behave differently. This applies to situations such as:

Citizenship-related forms
Passport applications
Local government systems
School and college portals

If a specific portal rejects or garbles your Nepali Unicode text, that is a sign the system may expect something different, don't assume the problem is with your typing method.

Method 3: How to Type Nepali in Preeti on a Laptop

Preeti is worth learning if you regularly deal with:

Government-office legacy workflows

Many offices still exchange documents originally typed in Preeti.

Typing jobs and exams

Some Nepal typing tests and clerical roles are still built around the Preeti layout.

Old Word documents

Editing a document that was originally typed in Preeti is easier if you stay in Preeti.

Printing/design workflows

Some older print and design pipelines were built around Preeti-based files.

Existing Preeti files you already have

If most of your archive is already in Preeti, converting per-document may be simpler than switching systems entirely.

Preeti uses a fixed keyboard mapping, each English key produces a specific Nepali character, unrelated to how the word sounds, so it needs to be memorized and practiced rather than typed intuitively.

Already Have a Preeti Document? Convert It to Unicode

A common situation: someone emails you an old Word document typed in Preeti, and it opens looking like broken English rather than Nepali.

1
Copy the Preeti textOr use file import if your document is a DOCX, PDF, or TXT.
2
Open Merokalam's Preeti to Unicode ConverterA free browser-based tool, nothing uploaded to a server.
3
Paste or import your fileSupports pasted text as well as DOCX, PDF, and TXT import.
4
ConvertThe tool reads the Preeti mapping and outputs real Unicode.
5
Copy or export the Unicode resultExport as Word DOCX, PDF, or plain TXT.

Convert Preeti to Unicode →

If you're doing this from a phone instead of a laptop, Merokalam's Preeti to Unicode on Mobile guide covers the same conversion on Android and iPhone.

Need Unicode Text in Preeti?

The reverse situation also comes up, you have modern Unicode text, but need it in Preeti for an old template, a printing workflow, or a system that still expects the legacy font. Merokalam's Unicode to Preeti Converter handles this the same way, paste or import, then export as DOCX, PDF, or TXT.

Does English to Nepali Typing Translate English?

This trips up a lot of beginners. Typing mero ghar nepal ma cha and getting Nepali text is transliteration, converting the sound of the words into Nepali script, not translation.

Typing / Transliteration

namasteनमस्ते

The Nepali word "namaste," just written phonetically in English letters first.

Translation

Helloनमस्ते

An actual English word converted into its Nepali equivalent, a different task entirely.

Merokalam's typing tools handle transliteration, not translation, so type the Nepali word phonetically, not its English meaning.

Which Nepali Typing Method Is Best?

I only type Nepali occasionally

Use online phonetic typing. No setup, no commitment.

I type Nepali every day

Set up a Windows keyboard so you're not opening a website every time.

I am preparing for a Nepali typing job

Learn Unicode and/or Preeti based on the specific exam's requirements, and practice with Typeshala.

I work with old government documents

Learn Preeti, and keep the Preeti/Unicode converters bookmarked.

I live abroad and just need Nepali for Facebook/messages

Use phonetic Unicode typing, exactly the same as anyone typing from Nepal.

How to Type Nepali on a Laptop Outside Nepal

None of the methods above depend on where you're physically located. Whether you're in the USA, Australia, UK, Canada, Japan, or anywhere in Europe, Unicode typing works identically, phonetic typing, Windows keyboard setup, and Preeti all function the same regardless of your laptop's region settings or your location.

Still Using Windows 10?

Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Some steps in this guide are similar on Windows 10, but exact screenshots and menu names can differ. If your laptop still runs Windows 10, most of the setup path (Settings → Time & language) will look familiar, but consider Microsoft's current upgrade or Extended Security Updates guidance for your device.

Using Another Computer?

This guide focuses on Windows 11. If you're on a different device, the phonetic and Preeti/Unicode conversion tools above still work identically since they run in your browser. Dedicated setup guides for other platforms:

Nepali Keyboard Not Working on Windows 11? Try These Fixes

Nepali language installed but keyboard does not appear

Open Language & region, click the three-dot menu next to Nepali, choose Language options, and confirm a keyboard is listed under "Installed keyboards." Add one if the list is empty.

Windows keeps typing English

Check the taskbar language indicator, if it shows ENG, press Windows + Space to cycle to the Nepali layout before typing.

Keyboard language switches back automatically

Some apps remember a per-window input language. Reselect Nepali after switching between windows if this happens.

Nepali letters show as boxes

This is usually a font issue, not a typing issue. Make sure the app or website is using a Unicode-capable font.

Preeti text looks like random English characters

The Preeti font isn't installed or active on the viewing device. See the dedicated section below.

Copy/paste changes the text

Paste as plain text (often Ctrl+Shift+V) if the destination app is reformatting or auto-correcting your Nepali text.

Word displays Nepali incorrectly

Confirm the font applied to that text is a Unicode Devanagari-capable font, not a Preeti-only font.

Nepali input option disappeared

Check whether the language pack was removed under Language & region, reinstall it if needed.

Windows + Space does not show Nepali

This means only one keyboard layout is currently installed. Revisit the Add a keyboard step above.

Browser typing works but Word does not

Confirm Word is using the same Windows input language you switched to; some apps default back to the primary keyboard on launch.

Why Does Preeti Text Look Like Random English Letters?

This is one of the most useful distinctions in this whole guide. A Preeti document opened without the correct font installed shows the raw underlying Roman characters instead of Nepali, because Preeti maps Nepali letters onto ordinary English character codes rather than using real Unicode code points. So a word that should read नेपाल can appear as something like "g]kfn" when the Preeti font isn't active.

If the document truly needs to stay Preeti

Install and apply the correct Preeti font so it displays as intended.

If you just need to read or reuse the text

Convert it to Unicode with the Preeti to Unicode Converter so it displays correctly everywhere, permanently.

Useful Windows Shortcuts for Nepali Typing

Only shortcuts directly relevant to typing are listed here. Some third-party keyboard tools let you customize the input-switch shortcut separately from this default.

How to Improve Nepali Typing Speed

Don't chase WPM before you can consistently hit the correct letters. A realistic order that actually works:

1
Accuracy firstGet comfortable producing correct Nepali text before worrying about speed.
2
Learn key positionsIf you're learning Preeti, memorize the layout in small chunks rather than all at once.
3
Short wordsStart with two and three-letter Nepali words.
4

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I type Nepali on my laptop?
The easiest way is phonetic typing: write Nepali words using English letters on a site like Merokalam's Easy Nepali Typing, which converts them into Nepali Unicode instantly, no installation needed. For regular use, you can also set up a Nepali keyboard directly in Windows 11.
How do I add Nepali keyboard in Windows 11?
Go to Settings, then Time & language, then Language & region. Select Add a language, search for Nepali, and install it. Then use the three-dot menu next to Nepali to add a specific keyboard layout if needed.
How do I type Nepali in Microsoft Word?
Word uses your Windows input-language settings, so once Nepali is installed in Windows, switch to it with Windows + Space and type directly in Word. Alternatively, type in Easy Nepali Typing and paste the Unicode result.
Can I type Nepali without installing software?
Yes. Merokalam's Easy Nepali Typing tool runs entirely in your browser. Type phonetically, copy the Nepali Unicode output, and paste it anywhere, no download or account required.
How do I type Nepali using English letters?
This is called phonetic or Romanized typing. Write the Nepali word the way it sounds, for example "namaste," and a transliteration tool converts it to the correct Nepali script, नमस्ते.
How do I switch from English to Nepali keyboard?
Press Windows + Space to cycle through your installed keyboard layouts, or click the language indicator in the taskbar and select the layout directly.
What is Nepali Unicode?
Unicode is an encoding standard that gives every Devanagari character used in Nepali a fixed, universally recognized code, so Unicode Nepali text displays consistently across websites, apps, and devices.
What is the difference between Preeti and Unicode?
Unicode is a real encoding standard that works consistently everywhere. Preeti is a legacy keyboard-mapping font system that maps Nepali characters onto ordinary English character codes, so it only displays correctly when the Preeti font is installed on the viewing device.
Is Preeti a Unicode font?
No. Preeti predates widespread Unicode support for Nepali and works by remapping standard character codes, not by using genuine Unicode Devanagari code points.
Which Nepali keyboard is best for Windows 11?
It depends on your use. For daily general typing, the Windows Nepali/Indic keyboard is convenient. For occasional use, online phonetic typing needs no setup. For legacy office documents or typing exams, Preeti may still be required.
How do I type Nepali on Google Docs?
Use your Windows Nepali keyboard the same way you would in any app, or type in Easy Nepali Typing and paste the Unicode result into your Doc.
How can I type Nepali on Facebook from PC?
Type using your installed Windows Nepali keyboard, or paste Unicode text copied from Merokalam's typing tool, directly into the Facebook post or comment box.
Why does my Nepali text show squares?
This is usually a font-rendering issue rather than a typing problem, the app or website is using a font that doesn't support Devanagari characters. Try a different app, or check the font applied to the text.
Why does Preeti text look like English letters?
Preeti text only displays correctly with the Preeti font installed and active. Without it, the browser or app shows the raw underlying Roman characters that Preeti secretly maps to, instead of Nepali.
How do I convert Preeti into Unicode?
Paste the Preeti text, or import a DOCX, PDF, or TXT file, into Merokalam's Preeti to Unicode Converter, then copy or export the clean Unicode result.
How can I practice Nepali typing?
Use Merokalam's free Typeshala Online, which offers structured lessons for Preeti, Romanized Unicode, and English QWERTY, plus a typing game and a Lok Sewa-format timed test.
Is there an online Typeshala?
Yes, Typeshala Online at merokalam.com/typeshala/ is entirely browser-based, free, and requires no download or account.
Do I need to install a Nepali font to type Unicode?
No. Modern operating systems and browsers already include Unicode-capable fonts that display Devanagari correctly, so typing Nepali Unicode does not require installing anything extra.
Can I type Nepali on a laptop outside Nepal?
Yes. Location doesn't affect any of these methods; phonetic typing, Windows keyboard setup, and Preeti all work identically whether you're in Nepal, the USA, Australia, UK, Canada, or elsewhere.
What is the shortcut to change keyboard language in Windows 11?
Windows + Space cycles through your installed keyboard layouts. You can also click the language indicator in the taskbar to pick a layout directly.
